CRUNCH! Watch out for falling boulders

Well, I remember I was at work or out and about on this unusually rainy Utah day, Thursday May 12, 2005. We were leasing this home with an option to buy, and I got a phone call from a neighbor saying that I probably ought to come home. It just so happened that my then wife was also away from the house. When we arrived home we saw the damage that had occurred. There were renters who had recently moved out of the studio apartment that was crushed. When they first got married they moved into the little studio apartment above the one-car garage / shed and lived there for a short time. When the boulder came down it crashed right through that apartment bounced across the brick driveway and landed on the other side in between some trees, and has made a permanent home there ever since.

Governor John Huntsman Jr. flew in by helicopter in person and offered us his condolences.

If you take a couple steps into the driveway you can still see the 7′ boulder on the left. (1468 N. 1550 E. Provo, UT)

It is interesting to note that the article came out on Friday the 13th.  My take-home lesson: we definitely were NOT meant to buy that house…

P.S. My then wife and I (no kids) ended up divorcing 1 year later. The building where we originally met, Provo Tabernacle, ended up burning down as well. Between the boulder and the fire I’d say Someone knew that after 5 1/2 years we were better people apart than together 🙂.  I now (2016) have been happily remarried for 9 1/2 years and we have two beautiful daughters.  I am thankful for all that I have been through but would definitely not want to go through it again.

P.P.S. Our story was on the front page of multiple newspapers the next day, Friday the 13th 2005. I have a copy of two of the newspaper articles and have attached pictures of both of them.
